After the Show: What to SEE and Where to EAT in NYC
Dun…Dun…Dunnnnnnnnnnnn… The 2015 National Stationery Show held at the Javits Center in New York city starts THIS SUNDAY! We’ve been so busy printing here at Paisley Dog Letterpress that we haven’t had time to make dinner plans or decide what we’ll be doing in NYC when we aren’t busy on the showroom floor. So, We asked our good friend/New York resident Fred to give us the lowdown on what to do in our down time while in the Big City.
Jacob Javits! New City’s conference hall designed by world famous architect I.M. Pei. Situated along the Hudson River far from the city hustle and bustle, it can seem a bit remote, but don’t worry, there is still quite a bit to do within walking distance or a short cab ride and it’s all well worth it.
One of my favorite iconic city locations is the Pier 66 Maritime Café at the Frying Pan. Open from May 1st to September 30th, this pier café on the Hudson provides beautiful river views, relaxing atmosphere, a nice lunch, and great drinks. If it’s a beautiful day, get there early because you won’t be the only person with that idea. While there, check out the “Frying Pan Light Ship.” An old research vessel docked alongside the pier, no longer seaworthy, but open to the public and ready to be explored. Often used as an event space or performance space, you may find some dj’s in the engine room playing music in the dark industrial space, or some performers on the upper decks drawing you into their world. Check it out.
If bigger ships are your thing and maybe a touch of patriotism, don’t miss the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space museum docked on Pier 86. A world class museum aboard the retired Intrepid Air Craft Carrier. Not only is that mega structure a sight to behold and explore, you can also check out Nasa’s Space Shuttle Enterprise, the retired supersonic Concorde, and even a military submarine. Don’t forget to check out the Hubble Space telescope exhibit while there to see some amazing space images.
Maybe a day at the park is your thing? Check out NYC’s newest public park, the Highline Park. This is a retired elevated railroad track that used to service the meat packing industry of New York’s olden days. The track starts in the Hudson Yards and winds all the way down to the Meat Packing district on 14th street. An amazing architectural greenspace with beautiful and intimate city views as you wind above the city streets of NYC. Form and function come together in this excellent use of city space, truly turning an eye sore into a sexy, cosmopolitan stroll through the city. When you get to 14th street, take a look up at the Standard Hotel, you may just get a voyeuristic view into one of the rooms and exhibitionist never seem to disappoint.
There’s always bowling… When a long day at the conference leaves you wanting some drinks, some pub grub, and a little friendly competition, head over to Lucky Strike Lanes. Its trendy, its sexy, its rock and roll, its drinks, its food, and oh yeah, it’s bowling. Nothing more to say other than check it out, it’s always a good time.
As far as real food goes… there are quite of bit of options since you are right by Hell’s Kitchen. If you’re looking for a corporate dinner, or maybe just a chic and fun atmosphere, head on over to Clyde Frazier’s Wine and Dine. Restaurant of the legendary New York Knicks player and announcer Clyde Frazier. Show up with a lot of people, have a lot of food, have a lot of wine, and then when you’re nice… head over to the indoor basketball hoop and shoot around. Nothing like watching drunk people try to make some hoops. It’s a classy place without the stuffy atmosphere. Just go and have a good time.
Now like I said, you are in Hell’s kitchen, so there are tons of Hole-In-The-Wall restaurants as well as high end with amazing food. For amazing steaks head over to Uncle Jacks Steakhouse. For a low key experience, try some amazing Thai food at Larb Ubol. Just bust our your YELP app and explore. Plenty to see and eat.
Jump in a cab and head over to time’s square for bright lights, big city, and Broadway, maybe while you’re there you can eat at Lidia Bastianich’s Becco. The food network’s mega star and successful restauranteur, Lidia has put together an Italian concept restaurant that will satisfy with authentic Italian and fresh made pasta daily. I suggest reservations because the wait can get long.
If shopping is what thrills you, then head over to Herald Square where you can shop at the legendary Macy’s flagship store (check out the original wooden escalators while you’re there) or visit the tech heaven of B&H Photo and Video. A true playground for anyone who loves anything electronic. If you’re looking for some awesome ethnic food while there, head over to Korea Town on 32nd Street between Broadway and 5th Avenue for some awesome Korean BBQ. My favorite spot is Kun Kip if you don’t know how to order, let me help you out, get the short ribs and the spicy pork. Thank me later.
This should help get you started on your trip to NYC, but don’t be afraid to explore, New York has so much more to offer. This is just the tip of the iceberg.
